Guide Lecturer
John Hines is Professor in the School of History and Archaeology at Cardiff University, and is a specialist in the archaeology of the early medieval period, particularly the material culture and literature of the Vikings.
Your itinerary
Day 1 - London - Krakow
We arrive in Krakow airport and transfer to our hotel in the city.

Cobbled streets, historic tenement houses, synagogues and countless cafés and restaurants create a magical atmosphere which will enchant anyone. Day 2 - Krakow
We spend the day in Krakow. We visit the Archaeological Museum and then explore Wawel Castle, where the earliest settlement was established on a hill beside the river. Here we will see the excavations beneath the castle itself.

Day 3 - Krakow - Wieliczka Salt Mine - Ojców
Travelling south of Krakow we get to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, which we will visit. Here, salt has been extracted since the 13th century. We then drive north to the Prądnik river valley in where remains of a Gothic castle can be seen near the village of Ojców.

Day 4 - Zamek Ogrodzieniec - Lodz
Today we leave Krakow behind and set off to visit the stunningly situated Gothic castle at Ogrodzieniec, first built in the 14th century. From here we make our way to Lodz and check into our hotel.

The Vienna House Andel's Lodz is impressive in all regards: historic red brick facade, remarkable location, housed in a former spinning mill on the grounds of Manufaktura, the city’s premiere shopping, arts and cultural centre. The unique architecture is a skilful combination of colours and forms, design and material, warmth and hospitality.
The on-site restaurant serves excellent fusion cuisine and a buffet breakfast each morning. The hotel also includes a luxury spa, which features a swimming pool with city views, as well as saunas and a fitness centre.

Day 5 - Lodz - Torun
This morning we visit the Archaeological Museum in Lodz before we take some time to explore Poland’s third largest city. We then drive to Sarnovo to see the long barrows, which are the earliest in Europe and from here it's on to Torun, with its well preserved centre.

Day 6 - Torun - Biskupin - Ostrow Lednicki
Today we visit one of the most famous archaeological sites in Poland, Biskupin, where Bronze and Iron Age lakeside settlements have been well preserved thanks to waterlogged conditions. We then continue to Ostrow Lednicki, an island on which the remains of a medieval settlement can be seen.

Day 7 - Gdansk
We set off on our drive to Gdansk, visiting Gothic barrows and stone circles at Odry en route. We continue to the Malbork Castle, a 13th century Teutonic fortress. We then drive on to Gdansk.

Day 8 - Gdansk - Warsaw by train
This morning we explore Gdansk including the old city centre, Archaeological Museum and the Historical Museum with an important amber collection. In the afternoon we enjoy a train journey to Warsaw.

Day 9 - Warsaw
Today we explore the city centre. After lunch there will be some free time to continue discovering the city at your own pace.
