Great Abbeys of Central Italy

9 days

From £3,195

Activity Level:

The vacuum left by the demise of Late antique Rome as the centre of political power was filled, to extent, by great abbeys which developed in central Italy, growing from early Christian piety to become fortresses of knowledge and power. These powerful monasteries formed the scaffolding of the Middle Ages, as centres of learning which retained, studied and transmitted Classical texts to future generations. Equally, abbeys held great temporal power, as kings and the affluent alike donated vast sums and deeds in order to gain their favour. This tour explores the origins and influence of these magnificent abbeys in beautiful the countryside of central Italy.

Tour highlights:

  • Ascend the Benedictine monastery at Monte Cassino, destroyed in World War 2 and reborn in an extraordinary reconstruction
  • Explore St Benedict’s Cave, the so called Sacro Speco in Subiaco, hanging suspended over a mountainous void, where the first organised monastic rule was created
  • Discover Rome from a different viewpoint – western Christian communities originating within the Imperial capital
