Ancient Rome with Dame Mary Beard
No other Ancient Historian or Classicist has captured the public’s attention in the same way as Dame Mary Beard, who has written seminal works on Pompeii and Rome and shaped a generation’s view of the ancient world through a series of ground-breaking documentaries. Mary will offer her unique insights to the Roman and Imperial Forums and will guide you around one of the most intriguing ancient monuments, namely Montetestaccio, a 35-metre-high mound made up of ancient pottery sherds. Guests will also be treated to an evening lecture given by Mary, as well as a gala dinner. This tour is co-led by an Andante Guide Lecturer, who will show guests other wonders of Ancient Rome, including the Forum Boarium, with the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, where Romans picked up the grain dole, and the Campus Martius, home to the Pantheon. The tour will end with a visit to the spectacular Hadrianic Villa at Tivoli.

Day 1 - London - Rome
Today we fly from London to Rome and check-in to our hotel. In the afternoon, we explore the Campus Martius, including the Republican Temples in the Largo Argentina and the Piazza Navona, once the stadium of Domitian and today a delightful stadium shaped piazza adorned with Bernini’s Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. We also view the Temple of Hadrian and the spectacular Pantheon, built under Hadrian and comprising the largest unreinforced concrete dome.
Day 2 - Rome
We start the day with Arch of Constantine, the construction of which included the looting of art from various imperial monuments built under Trajan, Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius. A short walk away is the Basilica of San Clemente, a beautiful 12th century church whose 19th century excavations revealed a Paleo-Christian church dedicated to San Clemente, as well as a 2nd century Mithraeum. We proceed to explore the late antique houses underneath the Basilica of Santi Giovanni and Paolo on the Caelian hill. After an independent lunch, we visit the Circus Maximus, as well as the Forum Boarium and the Forum Holitorium. Here we see the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, which may have been the statio annonae where the grain dole was distributed in ancient Rome. We also see the Republican Temples of Portunus and Hercules Victor, as well as the Theatre of Marcellus, built in honour of Augustus’ nephew.
