Summary
Life and death of a controversial hero
Colonel TE Lawrence – ‘Lawrence of Arabia’ – was one of the greatest celebrities of the 20th century. He was also one of its most controversial figures – for some, a real-life hero and brilliant guerrilla commander, for others, a self-promoting charlatan. Lawrence’s character and role – in particular, the reliability of his famous war memoir, Seven Pillars of Wisdom – was a central question for the Great Arab Revolt Project, a ten-year investigation of the archaeology of ‘Lawrence of Arabia’s War’ co-directed by your Guide-Lecturer Neil Faulkner. We will use our visits to ‘Lawrence sites’ in Dorset – his home at Cloud’s Hill, his tomb effigy at Wareham and burial place at Moreton, and the home of his friend Thomas Hardy at Max Gate – to explore the character and role of TE Lawrence and attempt to sift fact and fiction. Our tour will also include special access to Lawrence material held at the Tank Museum at Bovington, and a fresh viewing, with detailed commentary based on archaeological investigation of film location sites, of the iconic 1962 David Lean movie.
