Ancient & Medieval Gems of the Adriatic
Summary
Exploring Croatia, Greece, Albania and Montenegro on a cruise
The Adriatic Coast has been occupied and conquered by an assortment of people over the millennia. Greek writers described the inhabitants living on the coast as Illyrians, an ill-defined population which didn’t share a common identity. Thracians, Greeks and, later, Romans shaped this coastline, leaving behind them sites, such as Butrint and Apollonia, which bear witness to their ancient splendour. More recently, it was the Venetian republic, which ruled much of the Adriatic coast from the 14th Century to the Napoleonic era, that left its imprint on the region’s cities, notably Dubrovnik, whose streets and monuments are so reminiscent of Venice itself. This cruise, meandering down the scenic Illyrian coast, explores these historical gems, from the charming island of Corfu to the well-preserved archaeological sites found in the enigmatic Albania.
