Tony Wilmott

Tony Wilmott specialises in the Roman and Late Antique periods, with particular interests in the Roman military and frontiers, in Roman religion, and also in the late and post-Roman transition.
He is Senior Archaeologist at Historic England and has directed a number of excavations, among which include an impressive 23 seasons of work on the Hadrian's Wall World Heritage Site and the ruined Whitby Abbey. Other sites include Richborough Roman Fort and the amphitheatre at Chester. Tony has published several books and many articles in archaeological journals, and was crowned Current Archaeology magazine's Archaeologist of the Year in 2012. He is also a recognised authority on the Roman amphitheatre.Â
Two more of Tony's interests are the development of the early Anglo Saxon church and medieval heraldry. He has travelled widely throughout the Roman Empire, to places such as Syria and the Middle East, and has also ventured beyond the Imperial frontiers in China, South America and Antarctica.Â
